"My name's Bill, and I'm an English major."

Oh, if only someone had thought to do an intervention back in 1996. The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem.

My name is Derek, and I'm a recovering American Studies Major.....

I say embrace LA (Literature Abuse, not Los Angeles)! Reading is good for you! People can be mean. Books, never! I have stacks and stacks of books, and couldn't imagine not having them. So many books, so little time!

Remember Bill, denial is underrated!

I'm much too far-gone now to ever get clean now. I think I crossed the line when I read Virginia Woolf's Orlando backwards to write a paper on its symbolism. There's no coming back from a dose like that!

However, it could be worse: for a semester or two, I actually considered going into film studies. Thankfully, that was too "out there", even for me.

Sad thing is, I regularly carry a book around when I hang out with friends, in case things get dull. A normal paperback I can usually fit into my baggier jeans pockets. I think thats the actual reason I never finished Infinite Jest -- there was no discrete way of carrying it around with me. Plus, you know, it's HEAVY.
