This item (via Rake's Progress) reminds me of a story that one of my professors told me. Apparently, someone started a fire in the stacks at Wayne State University's graduate library last year. All the damage was concentrated in every area that included any literature on the Holocaust. When they apprehended the perpetrator, it turned out the vandal was a member of the faculty. I have no idea what happened to him, although damage ended up being fairly minimal, except for some water damage.

In other "damaged books" news, I discovered that there seems to be some sort of mold growing on the bottom of my The Joy of Cooking book. This irks me, since this is the source of my favorite gazpacho recipe, as well as of a really good roasted bell pepper soup recipe. If I have to, I will buy a new copy; this is my favorite cook book by far.
