Parental Update

BTW, since Derek asked, my Dad's doing fine, or at least better. His eye is apparently healing nicely, although he's still not able to see much aside from light and shadows with it; apparently, the air bubble that they injected into it to support it while it was healing has yet to disipate, and is obscuring his vision. But he's driving around on his own, and coming into work occasionally, so it looks pretty positive.

This Saturday, though, my mother is going into the hospital for gastric bypass surgery. It's something she wants and needs (she has diabetes, as well as a bone spur in her heal that is worsened by the weight), but it still makes me nervous. I mean, it is surgery. There's all sorts of stuff that I hadn't considered that she'll have to deal with post-op; she'll need to take Nexium (I think) for the rest of her life to deal with the excess acid in her stomach -- the part of the stomach that will no longer be participating in digestion; she will no longer be able to take aspirin, which she does because our family has a history of blood clots; and she will no longer be able to eat Ramen, because she'll be able to eat so little that she'll need to consume mostly proteins. Plus several weeks after the surgery where she won't be able to drink Diet Coke. She's making all sorts of plans for her recupperative time, mostly involving knitting, scrapbooking, or other crafty crap, but it makes me nervous -- hospitals always make me nervous -- and I'm pretty sure it makes my dad nervous. He's been acting like a tit for a couple weeks.

Glad to hear that pop is doing better. Let's hope that air bubble disipates soon! I know how he feels. I had sinus surgery (5 different proceedures) and deviated septum surgery last year. They inject this gel into your sinus cavities to cushin everything and help it heal. The stuff stays in until your healed up. It was AGONY. Like the worst cold you ever had. Drove me nuts.

But now i can look back and see that it was worth being uncomfortable and miserable in the short term, cause the long term benefits have been SO worth it.

Best wishes to your mom for a successful and safe surgery! I'll be sending you and her "good thoughts" on Saturday. Keep us posted on everyone's progress.

Cheers!
