Sky Captain and the World of Last Weekend

Another boring weekend. I went over Julie and Mike's on Saturday, and we watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. I sort of wanted to like the film, but I just couldn't. It felt sort of claustrophobic, which I can't account for. I wanted to be thrilled, but the plot was basically that of any given Fleischer "Superman" short, only a lot longer. It should have been a lot more imaginative, and less formulaic. The color really bugged me, with a washed-out look that was just irritating. I admire what the director was trying to accomplish, but I don't think the experiment was ultimately successful.

I had forgotten that the movie starred Jude the Ubiquitous and Angelina Jolie's Lips, too. I tried not to hold it against the filmmakers.

That said, I really, REALLY liked the old-school art-deco robots that populated so much of the film. And the zeppelins -- gotta love the zeppelins.

My parents are doing well; my dad goes in for the surgery tomorrow, and my mom has already gotten tired of the shakes she's supposed to be drinking; she doesn't like the overwhelming sweetness, or something. She's been experimenting to see what she can eat and not. They're talking about using the money that my dad get's from his motorcycle accident a couple years ago to move down to my mom's hometown in Indiana. She would have to get a job, probably in Lafayette, but she would be happy to do that if it meant she could move back there.
