Now Sing It With Reckless Abandon

OK, so I have another interview for Wednesday, at the same time that I would have been interviewing for the job in Delaware. Granted, both of the interviews I have are in relatively remote areas, but that at least prospective employers are starting to pay attention. I'm certainly feeling better about choosing not to go to Delaware.

I broke my record for resumes sent out today with a full 17 resumes, including one application to be the Media Librarian for World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., in Stamford, Massachusetts. Yeah, as if I was going to not apply to that one!

I am feeling expansive tonight, so I present, for your enjoyment...

The Free Design: "2002 A Hit Song" I first heard The Free Design on the Gilmore Girls soundtrack*, and found that I was intrigued by the mild easy-listening psychedelia of this vocal group. So I purchased an import "greatest hits" disc, except the group never really had any hits, and were crippled in their success by distribution problems by their record label. They would probably be completely forgotten, except that in the mid-1990s, they gained a very loyal following in Japan, where their albums were reissued. They were championed by artists such as Cornelius, Saint Etienne, Stereolab (who named an EP after the group), Pizzicato Five, and the High Llamas. It turns out that I was already familiar with one of their songs already: "Bubbles", which was remade by Dressy Bessy for The Powerpuff Girls: Heroes & Villains CD.**

This song is absolutely lovely, with typically tight vocals and an upbeat instrumental arrangement. The arrangement sounds a lot like an arrangement of a Pizzicato Five song to me, for some reason. The lyrics deal humorously with the group's continuing difficulty trying to get a hit song:

Promotion will cause a big commotion
So, deejay, teenie bopper answer me this:
How can this hit miss?
We've done it all right and sealed it with a kiss.
There's just one fact that we can't quite shirk:
We did all this last time, and it did not work!

But! This time we're sure to have a hit, hit, hit.
Sure to be a hit

Now that's entertainment!

(I have no idea how many downloads YouSendIt allows anymore, but if you want to hear it, and it's all downloaded out, feel free to e-mail me: THE MESSAGE OF THE FREE DESIGN MUST BE SPREAD!)

*An album which I highly recommend, by the way: it might be the best TV soundtrack that I have ever heard that wasn't composed by Angelo Badalamenti.
**An album wich I highly recommend, as well, as it has original songs by Devo, Komeda, the Apples in stereo, Frank Black, Shonen Knife, Bis, and the aforementioned Cornelius.

Don't give up hope - Dorothea at Caveat Lector is now sweating out receiving her offer letter, but has a fax copy in hand and there are still jobs out there to be had.

Good luck on the wrasslin' position - would you need to come up with a ring persona and acid-free Lycra library wear?

I've been surprised by how many interviews I seemed to get all at once: counting the aborted trip to Delaware, there would have been three interviews scheduled for today. And before now, I only had one interview in six months! Part of that is my fault: I was relying on national job listings for too long, not recognizing that most public and smaller academic libraries, i.e., libraries that would actually hire me, advertise positions in regional job listings. So once I changed my source of listings, I think my chances of hire improved.

Personally, I would prefer to be a Lucha Librarian: I think I would be better looking as a masked wrestler like El Santo. Unfortunately I don't speak Spanish, so Lycra-ware it is.

A cape, perhaps? And superfantastic shoes for the sportiness recommended by the Manolo?

If you read the wisdom of the Manolo, you can be your dream of the Lucha Libre Libros. Spanish not actually required. ;)

I don't know that wearing Manolo Blahniks would make me feel any more Lucha Libre than I already do. Or did you mean shoes for men?

I'm picturing myself tottering about in size 13 Manolo Blahniks...
