I've decided to drive to Wahington, D.C., on Saturday to see a friend. It does take me a couple hours out of my way, but then again, I don't have better plans for Saturday;I will be driving a rented car;I will be staying at his place;and he promised to both buy me dinner (I'm a sucker for free food) and to show me around the city a bit before I go. I haven't been to D.C. since the March on Washington in 1993, when my shaved head became extremely sunburnt thanks to some over-zealous protesters. Plus I had no money for food, so I didn't really eat the entire time I was there. I think somebody gave me their crackers after they ordered soup, and there were some concerned citizens passing out water to marchers unaccustomed to summer in the capitol.
So anyways, that should be an adventure. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

Bill!
Have a great time in D.C.! And don't forget to give ol GWB and Co a one finger salute! Bastards.
;-) db
A man after my own heart, it seems. The spur of the moment road trip is one of the most beautiful things on the planet.
I have a certain affection for D.C., which to me seems as much a non-place as anywhere. Nobody comes from Washington, so the entire culture is dependent upon the imposed symbolism of 200 years and the feelings of whoever happens to be there at any given time. It's fascinating.
Hope you have fun. :-) C.
Oh, just to be annoying in my multiple posts, a brilliant D.C. song is the Postal Service's "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight." If you don't know it, check it out.
I'm certainly familiar with the Postal Service song, and I actually really like their album a lot.
I know a few people in DC, and, as you say, they're all from elsewhere. I hadn't really thought of it before, but it really is true!
