Uncontrollable Urge

Sorry that I have gone somewhat quieter than usual; work at the school has become progressively more overwhelming as the past month has worn on, largely thanks to the big move. See, in order to revitalize the city of Riviera Beach, the old building my site was in is being torn down, necessitating a move about a mile up the street. Earlier this week was the actual move, and now we're starting to have classes again. So, you know, huzzah! Coupled with the fact that it seems like everybody else in AmeriCorps has this week off because of spring break, and I'm a tad more mopey than usual. Everybody else seems to have big doin's going on, and I just seem to be constantly exhausted. The new school doesn't even have phone lines yet, so I can't even check my email from there. I'm only online now thanks to a stray wireless signal from the parking lot.

I've been reading the books of Daphne du Maurier lately, which are actually really very good. It started with "Rebecca", naturally, progressed to "Jamaica Inn", and then on to books of short stories. The local library seems to have a whole slew of her out of print books.

I've been listening to the new album by Dev2.0. What it essentially amounts to is the band Devo providing the songs and instrumental support behind five kids, aged 10-13, who are singing about uncontrollable urges and whipping it good. It sounds like a really lame idea, and the fact that it's been released by Disney sort of underscores its corporate-ness, but this is the sort of thing Devo has done throughout their career: they also relased an album of Muzak versions of their songs. And actually, Dev2.0 is quite listenable, and helped remind me that Devo are one of my favorite bands: their first three albums are classics, as far as I'm concerned. Consider it recommended.

If you read Rebecca then you should read Rebecca's Tale by Beauman...its the actual story of Rebecca rather than the second Mrs. de Winter...I enjoyed it much much more!
