About Lost: I really, really enjoyed it. This episode managed to set the stage for what's going to happen, and it did it really well. It left the viewer with a number of unanswered questions, like who was it that ran through the aisle right before the crash? My guess is Hobbit-boy. Which begs the question, where did he get to in the cockpit area while Greg Grunberg was being torn to ribbons? And what's up with the yellow labrador retriever? My parents, who watched the show, both commented on the yellow lab. My dad thinks it's going to save everybody or something, like Lassie, but he's partial to labs. (See below.) My feeling is, well, labs do not occur naturally; they are a people-oriented breed. This dog is on the island because its owner is on the island. Rather than being something reassuring, it's presence is a sign that something is quite wrong.
Also, in the opening moments, didn't Fox pass a white canvas shoe that was tangled in a tree? Where did that shoe come from? In fact, how did he end up so far away from the other passengers?
I think the show might have been a little too scary for my mom, although she found it compelling enough to give her full attention. Usually any show I enjoy, she'll glance up occasionally to see, in between doing other things. My dad objected to the opening scene, because he doesn't think a jet engine would still be running after a crash. It's not realistic, he said. I dunno what to say to him; he was put off of Firefly for a similar reason, when one of the early episodes had an old-fashioned doll in it. He said kids wouldn't be playing with those 500 years in the future.
I do wonder how it will be an on-going series. I can see it going for a season, but eventually I can't imagine any way they can avoid building a coconut car or hosting the Harlem Globetrotters. My hope is that the success of the premier will continue in the weeks ahead. I can't take losing another show I love.
The Gilmore Girls season premier was c'est magnifique, as well.
