I got to the library today, only to find that Veronica was too sick to make it to her dentist appointment, although not too sick to be at work. When I came into the back, I noticed that the computer at my desk was on and logged in; Veronica didn't know anything about it, but was pleased to find that I have been assigned a log-on. No one had bothered to let her know. There is also a drive set up for me to save my work on, so that she can access it without having to find the disc I use. She can't post anything onto it herself yet, but we were pleased by this turn of events.
I showed her the work I had done on the four questions from yesterday, and she was impressed that I was able to find as much as I did on the first question, about children's displays. I clarified what was being asked in the second and fourth questions, as well. The second question deals with students' interest in pursuing careers in the visual arts, and the fourth is interested in whether 2D renderings of three-dimensional objects in a digital environment are useful in the education of college students.
We walked over to the storage area beneath the Undergraduate Library for a brief explanation about sorting through the gift books. She made notes about what to do with, say, textbooks, and when we returned to Purdy-Kresge, I typed her notes into a one-page checklist in Word. I couldn't start today because the guy who supervises the storage area was not around. I believe I will start on it next week.
I was given a whistle; apparently this is the library's response to the attack last week. I was told that I was expected to return it at the end of the semester, so I am a bit reticent about even removing it from the package. I'm not overly concerned about the security situation; as I said before, I have had unpleasant encounters on campus in the past, and have managed to stay calm enough to get out of them unharmed. Unfortunately, this is an issue in an urban area such as Detroit, and you have to do the best you can to keep the area as safe as possible. I have noticed signs have been posted in the stairwells, and a campus policewoman now apparently has a station on the first floor of the library. Unfortunately, she gives me a dirty look every time I go to the lavatory, which doesn't do much to make me feel secure.
After I typed up the gifts sheet, I spent the rest of the day doing a bit more searching for the questions from yesterday. I'm still not certain that the materials I found for the last question were anything close to what the man who requested it needed, but I also didn't want to overcompensate too much and provide him with a lot of material he really didn't need.
