Virginia Plain

One down, one to go.

The interview this morning went well enough. My voice was hoarse from having woken up not too long before, and occasionally I would hear strange sounds where my voice should have been. I was like a blindfolded kid swinging at a pinata with some of my answers, especially towards the beginning, when I was certain I was hyperventilating.

Overall, though, I think I did an OK job. I told them that I have lived in Michigan all my life, and I just want to go somewhere new, and meet new people. Which is totally true. I actually made them laugh a couple of times, which always tends to put me at ease. The director responded favorably when I said my favorite authors were Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, and Terry Pratchett. Those aren't my only favorite authors, but those were the only ones that came to mind. I was also able to point out that my anxiety in talking to them was because of my overwhelming desire to get employed, and should not be seen as an accurate representation of my public speaking ability. I tried not to make it sound too defensive, but felt the director was at least amiably disposed towards me, and that it wouldn't hurt my chances. The interview lasted for over an hour -- one hour and nine minutes -- which bodes reasonably well for me; the "interview" with the Baltimore library was only ten questions, and only lasted for 15 minutes.

When they asked how soon I could start if hired, I said I would have to give two weeks notice (I think Glenn would understand if I gave him less notice, but I think employers want to be certain that you won't just cut out with no warning), and that since all my junk is boxed up in the garage, moving shouldn't be a problem. Cue more laughter.

I was told they have more people that they have to interview, but that they will be in touch. I have no idea whether they would be interested in having me come in for the second interview, but I certainly see it as a possibility. If nothing else, there's not the sense of defeat and failure I had after the Baltimore interview. Which is a good thing.
