Stranger Things Happen

Oh, and in case you don't know, Kelly Link's fantastic first volume of short stories (her second having just been published) is now available for download through the publisher's website. And, get this, it is absolutely free! I have given this book as a gift to just about anyone I thought might even remotely enjoy it, and I encourage anybody who is into speculative fiction to check it out, as well. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never look at Nancy Drew books the same again. Heck, you can't beat the price!

No problem!

Kelly Link is actually the reason I have this blog: I read a story of hers for the first time in "McSweeney's Treasury of Thrilling Tales" (or whatever the title was -- it was the story "Catskin", which is collected in her new volume, and which I just finished re-reading), and was so intrigued that I subscribed to the zine she co-edits, Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet. In one of the issues I received, there was an "Dear Aunt Gwenda" column written by Gwenda Bond. Her online bio linked to her fantabulous blog, and I checked it out. There was something there that I wanted to respond to -- probably about Gilmore Girls, or Hitchcock, or dogs -- so I wanted to comment, and I registered so that I could comment. I didn't want to be Mr. Anonymous. Which, of course, gave me a blog. This blog, actually: it hadn't really even occured to me to blog before that point. This is also why the address for my blog is so nonsensical: I should have made the address "cornjob.blospot.com", but by the time that occurred to me, the LIS Bloglist (among other people) had already posted a link to my page.

There were also a number of abortive titles for this blog, until I settled on the current one rather happily. The titles are too embarassing/difficult to explain, so I shan't be telling them to anybody.

Point is: this blog is Kelly Link's fault. So blame her.
