My first day as a completely unemployed person again, and I did absolutely nothing with my day. OK, so that isn't entirely true: I played Civilization for a few hours (that game can seriously suck up your life) and I watched "The Bad & The Beautiful" (Kirk Douglas-y!) and "Magnificent Obsession" (Douglas Sirk-y!) via the magic that is TiVO. When I briefly considered Film Studies as a major in college, I found myself drawn to the so-called "lesser auteurs" -- the Hollywood directors cited by the French cinephiles when they ran out of stuff to praise about Alfred Hitchcock. This group includes directors such as Vincent Minnelli, Douglas Sirk, and Nicholas Ray -- the director of "Rebel Without A Cause". Directors associated with the less acceptable/more commercial genres of melodramas/musicals.
